Got Issues at the Call Center You Work At?

If you work at a call center, you no doubt are familiar with the issues that call center workers face.  One
major issue is the pay structure.  Some call centers use complicated formulas to calculate your wage.  On
top of that they have a bonus system based on the opinion of a supervisor who may have less time on the
job than you.  Other call centers have a system based on voluntary customer surveys.  This can leave you
at the mercy of a customer who may or may not press the right button on their phone when completing the
survey.  Or they may choose to take their disagreement with company policy out on you no matter how
good of a job you did trying to address their problem.  Each of these systems make it hard for the worker
to earn a stable and dependable income from the time they put in each day.

Would You Like a Fair Disciplinary Policy at Work?

Another issue is disciplinary policy.  One such policy is based on acquiring a point when you do something
wrong.  Too often the policy is applied inconsistently.  Many times workers aren’t even told they received
a point for a supposed violation or given the chance to refute the claim if they feel it was untrue.  You can
even get penalized a point for getting sick and staying home from work to recover even if you have a note
from your doctor.

Wouldn't Seniority Be Nice?

How about the issue of seniority, or should I say the lack of seniority.  Wouldn’t it be nice to be rewarded
for your longevity and institutional knowledge you acquire at the company you work for rather than being
on the same wage rate as a new hire just out of training.  Shouldn’t there be some value in the efficiency
and ability to solve problems for customers that only can come from your experience on the job?

So What Can You Do?

So what can you do?  Fortunately, in America you have the federally protected right to organize a union at
your workplace.  The IBEW or International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is a Labor Union that can
lead you through this process and make sure you and your coworkers tools and knowledge needed to
negotiate the best possible contract with your employer.  With a union, you can negotiate for better
wages, holiday pay, vacations, health and pension benefits, and job conditions.  With a union, your rights
on the job are spelled out and must be respected.  With a union, you can stop abuses on the job.  It gives
you representation on the job and the right to file grievances if you are treated unfairly.  With a union, you
have greater security on your job.  You are no longer an at will employee.  The employer can’t fire you
without first having good reason and they must have the proof to back up their claim.
But it’s up to you and your co-workers to form a union and collectively bargain a contract with your
employer.   The IBEW would like to be your bargaining representative in this process.
